Welcome to my Substack, which I have entitled "The Photographer’s Eye."
Before we get going, let me introduce myself and explain a little about what I am hoping to share here.
My name is Giles Thurston, and I am a photographer based in Ely, Cambridgeshire, in the East of England.
My photography journey has spanned nearly thirty years. It started with casual attempts to capture the natural beauty around me during long runs or adventurous expeditions. Today, I take it more seriously, making dedicated photographic field trips with more sophisticated camera equipment.
To me, photography is more than just taking photos. It's about capturing moments and sharing the scenes that we see with others. I also find the creative process relaxing and calming. In a frantic world where our mental health is under constant attack, time with my camera is a way to disconnect, simplify life, and go with the flow.
After many years of trying to label my photography and put myself in a box – landscape, street, travel, etc. – I have come to the conclusion that my passion lies in photographing the human landscape. Natural and urban scenes, and our (humankind's) impacts and interactions with it. In particular, I am always looking for scenes that many would just walk by without a second glance or as I like to call it, searching for beauty in the mundane.
My aim here is to document my photographic journey, the images I capture, and the thought processes and motivations behind them. I am hopeful that by putting words to this process, it will not only be cathartic for myself but could give insights and inspiration to others.
